NDIS community participation

More of the places, people and activities that feel like you.

Community access support can help you take part in local life, build confidence and enjoy interests that matter to you. The starting point is not a standard activity list. It is your goals, preferences and pace.

Participation should mean more than simply going out.

Good community access support begins with understanding what you enjoy, what you want to try and what may be getting in the way. The goal may be confidence, connection, learning a route, joining a group, returning to a favourite activity or taking part more independently.

Support should be related to your NDIS goals and the funding available in your plan. We agree the purpose and practical arrangements before activities begin, including any costs that are not covered by the NDIS.

Community life shaped around your goals.

Explore interests

Find local activities, groups and places that match your interests, identity and comfort level.

Build confidence

Practise planning, communication, money skills or using public spaces with the right level of support.

Strengthen relationships

Support genuine participation and opportunities to connect with people who share your interests.

Prepare for new experiences

Break unfamiliar activities into clear steps, plan for access needs and talk through what to expect.

Grow independence

Adjust prompting and support as skills and confidence develop, in line with your goals.

What could community access look like?

Examples are a starting point only. The right activity depends on your goals and available funding.

Everyday community life

Shopping, appointments, libraries, cafés, local events and becoming familiar with places you use regularly.

Interests and wellbeing

Sport, art, music, nature, recreation or learning activities selected around what you enjoy.

Connection and confidence

Joining a group, practising social communication or developing confidence to participate with less support.

Questions before getting started.

Can I choose the activities?

Yes. Your preferences and goals should guide the support. We can help explore options without deciding for you.

Does the NDIS pay activity costs?

Usually, everyday costs such as entry fees, meals or tickets remain your responsibility unless your plan specifically says otherwise. We discuss costs before an activity.

Can support help me use public transport?

Where it relates to your goals and funded support, practising routes and transport confidence may form part of the arrangement. The exact scope is agreed first.

Can a family member or coordinator refer me?

Yes. They can make an initial enquiry, and we will confirm your consent, preferences and goals with you.

What would a good week look like?
